Volunteer

ACPSA volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Some volunteers offer a few hours of their time a year at specific events, while others work several hours a week year-round. Whatever your interests, talents, background and availability, we have opportunities for you.

Why volunteer?

  • Watch some amazing athletic talent, and be a part of supporting an individual’s growth!

  • Have fun meeting new friends

  • Gain coaching and officiating certificates

  • Gain experience working with individuals with a disability

  • Enhance your resume

  • If you’re aiming for a career in coaching, teaching, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy, volunteering with ACPSA can give you the experience to reach your goals!

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Program Volunteers: We are always looking for volunteers to assist coaches in our local programs by helping out at weekly practices. This would include opportunities to support athletes one-on-one where needed (picking up balls, modifying equipment, even jumping in as a partner/competitor if you’re comfortable, and set-up and take down of equipment.

  • Event Support & Fundraising: The ACPSA is fundraising year round to ensure that we can continue to run our programs for our clients. The success of our fundraisers are always reliant on volunteers to staff them and it is a low time commitment.

  • Coaching: All of our sport clubs are fully operated by volunteer coaches who run weekly practices and attend competitions and sporting events with their teams. If you’re interested in coaching, please let us know! No experience is required and we will offer NCCP training courses as they arise.

  • Referees & Scorekeepers: For local competitions, we’re always in need of referees and scorekeepers to keep the competition running smoothly. We provide all the training necessary to succeed in this role! As a bonus, at the end you’ll also be a certified provincial referee for Boccia!

What qualities are needed?

  • Enjoy being around others and open to new things!

  • Patient and able to adapt (or willing to learn how!)

  • Ability to follow instructions but also take the lead from time to time, if comfortable.

  • No prior experience is needed with adapted sports!

  • A criminal records check with vulnerable sectors check is required for volunteers working directly with our athletes.

How many hours per week?

Most of our programs run for 1.5 hours per week for 14 weeks in the fall and spring/summer. Life happens and volunteers sometimes have to miss sessions but we ask that our volunteers try to pick a program that will work well with their schedule. At least 24 hour notice is appreciated if going to miss a program, if possible. Volunteers are a critical part of our success!
